what happened June 18th?
June 18th is when we arrived at the Indiana house. We stayed in a hotel the first two nights until the living area was stripped of everything because it was SO disgusting. We unloaded the U-Haul and made the living room the only livable space until we can work on the rest of the house. Here are some pictures of the first couple days:
We do not have a functional kitchen. The appliances are all likely original to the house (1956) and the refrigerator is the only thing working but it smells so bad, it's basically useless.
For a kitchen, we are living out of two mini-fridges and a microwave (thanks to our great neighbor, Alicia) in the living room. We have a hot plate and a grill for cooking food. We have one functional shower, a semi-functional toilet, and no working faucets. The kitchen sink was leaking when we turned on the water (photo below) so that was sealed up and we are using a hose-filled 7-gallon camping jug for washing dishes, washing hands, etc. We're basically camping.
The to do list, just off the top of my head as I'm writing this:
- remove racoons from the attic (already done thanks to Chad)
- lift the foundation (the slab sank about an inch on the north and west side of the house)
- replace the roof
- replace the fascia, soffits, and gutters all around
- replace all insulation in the attic
- remove bushes from the sides of the house (already done thanks to Brandon)
- solve plumbing issues
- eventually, new windows and doors
- remove and replace all flooring (we are stripping down the floors to the concrete slab unless there are tiles, which are asbestos, at which point, we will seal them and lay new flooring over them)
- electrical...my goodness, electrical. I will make a separate post on this one soon. It's quite shocking.
- paint everything
- new kitchen, appliances, cabinets, etc.
- possible remove the kitchen wall and open everything up
- chimney masonry repair
- chimney and HVAC cleaning
- maybe add in A/C (for resale, we don't actually want A/C)
- brush my teeth
- feed the hog
- still got some homework to do
- still got those bills to pay
- wash the car...
On a separate note, so far we have seen racoons, possums, foxes, black squirrels, carpenter bees, chipmunks, and light up bugs. Good stuff. It has been quite an adventure so far.
